National Police Checks are a service offered by the Australian Federal Police. They are available only in specific circumstances or if you live in the ACT. Circumstances include checks under Commonwealth legislation and those seeking employment with the Commonwealth Government. Businesses and potential employees in other states can not request a criminal history check through the AFP and should refer to their state police or an accredited provider.
Applications can be done online or via post. Certificates provided are printed on secure paper and include a number of security features such as watermarks.
In addition to a National Police Certificate, the AFP also performs Fingerprint Checks and Company Checks.
A Fingerprint Check is used when there is a requirement for such a check to be conducted. This is usually due to a legal requirement or for regulatory reasons.
An AFP Company Check can be conducted which details any convictions or charges against a company. As with individual checks, companies must provide authorisation to allow this to take place. These are usually performed to meet with legislative or regulatory requirements for specific industries.
