The Ryerson Index is a collection of Death Notices and Obituaries from Australian newspapers. It has records dating back to 1831, and usually up to date listings within a week of the current day.

There are over 6.8 million entries in the index from 344 newspapers. Over 4 million of those are from the last 30 years, making it one of the most current databases anywhere.

A search may be performed using given and surnames, location, year, newspaper, state and updated date. The results provided are in list format and cite full name, notice type, date, event, age, publication and other details. They include death notices, funeral notices, obituaries and probate notices.

The project was started in 1998 by the Sydney Dead Persons Society. As such a great deal of historical data has a heavy New South Wales influence. It has grown with the assistance of volunteers around the country.

A simple thanks

5/ 5

Just wanted to thanks to the team at the Ryerson Index. So much hard work and time has clearly gone into compiling the database, and it is an excellent resource. Well done to all the volunteers and those involved.
